THINGS YOU CAN DO
- Parents who want to monitor what their child is watching can do a number of things :
1. Go to http://www.commonsensemedia.org/tv-reviews to look at the reviews for the television shows to see how much violence, sexual content, and inappropriate language is present.
2. Install the V-Chip where you need a code to watch certain television shows. See below for a V-Chip commercial.
3. Refrain from subscribing to certain channels such as HBO because it shows porn after a certain time at night.
4. Visit http://www.parentstv.org/PTC/familyguide/weekly.asp and look up the weekly prime-time television shows and see if they are rated appropriately for children.
5. Talk with your children about what they are seeing on TV.
- Make sure that you know and understand the ratings of TV shows.
- Try not to watch long blocks of television at one time and try to watch TV shows that are more realistic and semi-educational.
